Ok, so what exactly is the Blogger Bakeoff? In essence, it’s a fundraising initiative by Breadline Africa, a NPO that doesn’t just aim to feed Africa, but create sustainability by investing in long-term projects.
Or, for those of us that participate, it’s a chance to get your hands dirty, showcase your baking skills to the world, and raise much-needed money to support a very worthy cause :)
Why bread?
From peanut butter toast and French baguettes to pitas and tried and tested whole-wheat, bread is a global staple food and a symbol of nutrition and sustenance throughout the ages. There are millions of people in Africa living below the breadline, and we’re out to change that. Join the Worldwide Blogger Bake Off challenge, make a donation and help Breadline Africa to place community kitchens and gardens in desperate and needy communities. [link]
One of the things I particularly appreciate about the campaign is that they’re not only raising awareness about the problem, or providing a relatively easy means of contributing, but that they’re aiming for sustainable development. Instead of just throwing a bunch of loaves at the problem, they’re looking to build a “compact container bakery” (along with some training, no doubt), which will be producing bread for a while to come, even after the campaign has come and gone.
They’re also making it fun. Ok, so baking’s not my kind of fun, but I’m sure there are plenty of people out there that consider it otherwise :)
I was tagged for this by Shaun Oakes (Capetown’s Favorite Son), and I’m tagging the following people to do something about it:
- Jason Bagley - You’re the Chef, after all ;)
- Chris M - Use those SEO powers for good!
- Jared Head - You need to learn to post more often :/

Wogan, you are a legend.
Now don’t be shy to get your hands dirty and bake some Wogan loaves.
Well, it’s not really SEO skills that are required for this, it’s more social media I guess, I plan on doing something though.
Wogan loaves… wahhahahahhaha, classic!
Yeah, serious “wtf” moment there, lol… I couldn’t find any appropriate response, either.
I know SEO skills aren’t required, but if you can rank bloggerbakeoff.com for keywords like “africa poverty”, “fundraising initiative” and “paris hilton”, I’m sure it’ll make a difference ;)
[...] we’re using social media for something a whole lot more productive - raising money for the Blogger Bakeoff [...]
Hi there,
Just a quick note to say: THANKS FOR JOINING OUR CAMPAIGN. We’ve had a great response so far and many bloggers have been really supportive - it’s awesome.
I’m too scared to ask what a Wogan loaf is made from so let’s just leave it there. Good luck with that though … :)
Don’t forget to keep up to date with our blog - soon we’ll be writing about some of the projects you’ll be helping us to support - these are really exciting.
Happy baking!
Cheers,
Tamsin - Breadline Africa
Tamsin, I also have no idea what a Wogan loaf is … haha
Feel free to hit us with those initiatives ;)
Will do and good luck!
