NaNoWriMo 2008

Yes, it’s official (somewhat) - I’m taking part in NaNo this year.

In summary, NaNo is 50′000 words in 30 days, flying by the seat of your pants. The garage band of writing.

I’m definitely looking forward to it. If anything, I hope it helps me defeat my incredibly procrastinistic approach to writing. I’ve started and stopped so many projects in the past, it’s frightening.

Planning what I want to write would pretty much be a no-brainer - I’ve been all-plans no-action for too long now. I’m basically just waiting for the starting shot, and then it’s up and away.

So, checklist:

  • Plot - 85% there. The 15% is the part that counts, unfortunately, but I’m intending to work it out as I go.
  • Characters - 2 nailed down, 1 sort of complete, 2 more need planning.
  • World - Mostly worked out. Major elements there, including universal history.
  • As little extramural social activity as possible - Apart from a meetup on the 6th, I’m mostly clear.
  • Time to write - 4 hours/weekday, all day weekends.
  • Music - Still need to procure a wider variety of electro/trance/rock/rap…
  • Online storage - Check. If needed, will serve as sync point between home and office. Make better use of those 6am mornings ;)
  • Word Processor - Notepad, check. HTML savvy, check.
  • Website - check (it out: thedragonproject.net)
  • Twitter feed - @dragonproject

I’m going to need to borrow a pen, pencil and pad of stickynotes from the office closer to the time - I’ve already got the desk space I need to mess around with/reorder plot events, removing another task that has to be done via PC.

And yes, people to annoy/bounce ideas off - Jared’s apparently with me on this one, and I’m hoping to get to know more of the local NaNoWriMo crowd as the month progresses.

Yes, I’m making a big deal out of this (what with a dedicated site and twitter stream). If I don’t, I fear it might be sidelined again (as with all my other writing projects), and it’ll never get done. Not. Going. To. Happen.

Also, within the next 6 days, there are at least 4 web projects I need to round off, or they’ll keep biting me in the ass over November. If I don’t do them now, chances are I won’t have time to do them during November. I’m planning on doing nothing but writing, and I’m considering going as far as installing an entirely seperate OS to keep myself away from my web authoring tools.

So yes, busy week ahead. Let the games begin ;)

Good luck!
My nick on NaNo (like everywhere else) is mysehnsucht. I tried searching for you on Woganmay, but could not find you. Let me know what your nick is and I will add you as a buddy :)

My nick is “wogan”, but nanowrimo.org’s search function was having some issues last night, so here’s my URL: [link]

I have yet to sniff out the rest of the South African community…

Cool, thanks - added you. Check out the SA forum to find the rest of the SAFers. There is also a fairly active Facebook group for us.
