Gmail Drive - Cloud storage now comes with a drive letter
Posted at: 11:00 am on Thursday, 23rd October, 2008

This one’s been around for a while (I imagine) - a tool that maps a “drive” (like C:\) on your Windows PC to your Gmail account, allowing you to directly access the file storage capabilities:

Since it’s not an official feature of Gmail, Google could decide to retract use at any time, and since the files aren’t stored as emails, you might lose access to them. Use at your own risk ;)

I tried installing that a few weeks back - didn’t seem to let me in. I think the new gmail disallowed this function…. or it was vista and a firewall? hmm.

I haven’t tried it myself, so I wouldn’t know. Vista is a difficult one, though…

However, Google’s been working on a dedicated cloud storage system (codenamed “platypus”). We’ll probably see a launch in 2009.
