I have this habit about not blogging things, so forgive me that this post might seem rather obvious. If you’re a South African, and you’re on Twitter, chances are you’ve heard of this site - TwitterSA.

It serves a rather simple function - grabbing all the tweets posted from South Africa, and bringing them all together in one place. It’s designed to store tweets in a local database, so that even if Twitter goes on the fritz, the local tweets are still available, and chances are you won’t even notice the break in service.

The HTML version is designed to auto-refresh every 60 seconds. The page itself consists of little more than a table for layout, the TwitterSA logo (which should remain cached by your browser anyway), and the twitter stream. So far, my attempts at an AJAX version have failed (caching problem). I’m working on an iframe version that will make the refreshes less obtrusive, and also allow for more accurate statistics.

Feel free to keep it open in your browser, watch South Africa twitter away, and maybe add a few people you didn’t know about before. If you come across any users that are either spamming the stream or otherwise disrupting the flow, let me know via a dmsg. You can also follow the official TwitterSA user for updates.
